Configuring MIME Types

Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension (MIME) mapping provides a way of configuring browsers to view files that are in multiple formats. MIME mapping is an extension of the Internet mail protocol that allows any file type hosted on an Internet Information Services server to be opened by a "helper" application on Web clients. Internet Information Services installs the most common MIME types by default. MIME types for new applications or applications that are not widely used will have to be added manually. In some cases, a helper application may have to be configured on the Web client as well.
