A lukewarm reception awaited most returning Vietnam veterans, and Cotsakos was no exception:

'I tried to look for jobs, but most people were insulting at the interviews - being a war veteran had no value.

'A lot of people did not want anything to do with you. The last guy I saw was a bank vice-president, who said maybe he would consider giving me a teller's job. I never heard from him again.'

It was then that he got a timely break:

'My brother John, who is seven years older than me, helped the mayor in his election campaign. The mayor always gives out favors if he wins, so when he won, my brother said: "I am going to get you in to college." I said: "It's impossible, my grades are so bad."
