As far as IP is concerned, multicast datagrams are virtually indistinguishable from other forms of IP traffic. The only way to tell a multicast IP datagram apart from a unicast or broadcast IP datagram is the fact that the destination IP address of the IP datagram that is carrying the multicast data has a Class D address in the range of 224.0.0.0 through 239.255.255.255.
