4. The Cultural Environment

Culture is a perplexing notion. We can each identify with the idea that specific groups of people, be it a nation or a group of people within a nation, share certain commonalities that provide attachment to a society, but it is not so easy to identify what are the commonalities. The definition of culture itself is a difficult one to pin down as numerous definitions exist.1 By one definition, culture can be described as the learned beliefs, values and standards that are common to members of a group, and help to align interactions in the day-to-day life of group members.
