Since 1985, when the first edition of this book appeared, there has been much experimental and theoretical progress in this multidisciplinary subject. The nature of some “old” forces have been clarified while “new” forces have been discovered. The subject has matured into a rigorous discipline and a unifying area of chemistry, physics, and biology, and many university courses now routinely contain material on molecular and surface interactions. On the more practical side, many industrial and chemical engineering processes are now beginning to be understood and controlled at the fundamental level.
