Learning is about making connections. We know from neuroscience that when the brain first encounters something new, it immediately searches for past learning that is similar to, or associated with, the new learning. If the brain can locate these existing understandings, the corresponding neuronal networks are activated. This reinforces the already-stored information and assists in interpreting and assigning meaning to the new information. Thus learners literally build their own minds by constantly making and changing connections between what is new and what is already known.
