“Any questions?” the teacher asks. Predictably there's silence. Part of the issue is that students have simply been thinking about what the lecturer has been saying and trying to understand it at a basic level. They have not been thinking about whether they have any questions about the material. The switch from active listening to questioning is abrupt, and they simply haven't had time to process.

There's a relatively easy fix for this challenge: Write a Question. Simply ask students to spend a minute or two crafting a question about the content before you ask them if they have any questions.
