CHAPTER 12Presenting Like a Professional

Most professors are not trained professional speakers. Nevertheless, if we choose to do lecture presentations, we will be judged on how well we make them. More important, however, is that the quality of our lecture presentations influences how well students will learn, and we should therefore strive to do the best we can. There are several guidelines for public speakers that, if followed, can help you be more confident, more engaging, and more professional in your lecture presentations. In this chapter we offer four Tips for professional speaking that we find particularly appropriate for classroom lecture presentations. We summarize these Tips in Exhibit 12.1.
