ENGAGING LECTURE TIP 33 Icebreakers

Icebreakers can help you to build community in the course and thus help establish a positive classroom climate. You can break the ice by conducting an activity in which students meet each other and interact. You typically use Icebreakers at the beginning of the academic term or the start of an individual class session.

The goal of Icebreakers is to help students build a comfort level and feel like they are valued members of a class community. By providing structured activities for students to talk to one another and to get to know each other, you can help them establish connections that encourage students to share resources after class or to work together effectively during class.
