A truism in good pedagogy and effective public speaking is that it is important to know one's audience. Students have intellectual, social, and emotional characteristics that bear on their learning, and knowing about these prior to offering an interactive lecture session helps ensure a good match with the goal, the message, and the learners. Thus to craft and deliver the best presentation possible, it helps to know not only who students are but also where they stand on a given topic prior to a given lecture.
