Before discussing how knowledge-based systems can be applied to design, it is important to understand what we mean by the word design. Traditionally, a distinction is drawn between engineering design and industrial design:
Engineering design is the use of scientific principles, technical information, and imagination in the definition of a mechanical structure, machine, or system to perform specified functions with the maximum economy and efficiency (Fielden 1963).
