Chapter . Reconstruction of 3-D Relief Surfaces from 2-D Images

D. T. Pham[a], M. Yanga, F.M. Chan

Abstract

Various techniques have been employed to obtain 3-D surface models in the redesign of products and in the building of customized designs. However, these 3-D models have to be either painstakingly designed through an elaborate CAD process or reverse engineered from existing sculpted prototypes using multi-dimensional metrology. This paper presents a grey-level-based approach to 3-D relief surface reconstruction from a photographic 2-D image. A software package has been developed to convert a captured image into a 3-D data format for the interactive manipulation, visualization and subsequent reconstruction of the 3-D surface model.
