Transmission Media in Networks

4.1 Introduction

Recently, fiber and wireless have taken over most of the media space of copper, cables, and electrical conductors in the world of communications, especially in the United States. The choice of media for high-speed services differs from country to country. When it is necessary to deploy the plain old telephone service (POTS) lines to provide Internet type of services (twisted wire-pair, TWP), copper media can still be a reasonable choice. In this chapter, we present a very short glimpse at this phenomenal migration in the choice for media from copper to fiber and from copper to wireless.
