Packet forwarding

The third stage in this example simply touches on the most basic responsibility of a router: to move packets from one network interface controller (NIC) in the router to another. The example considers the connections from a remote device’s IP to NIC to be fixed. When a packet wants to go to a destination IP, a static table is used to determine what the next hop NIC is.
