Adjuster—A representative of an insurance company who handles claims. The adjuster can be either an employee of the insurance company or an outside representative hired by the company. The adjuster is never a representative of the policyholder. Adjusters always must follow the procedures and directives of the company.

Agent—A person or organization licensed to sell insurance for an insurance company. The two basic types of agents are captive and independent. Captive agents work for and sell the policies of one insurance company only. Independent agents may work with and sell policies for many different insurance companies.
