Setting Up the Page

Your first task is to set up the page format—its dimensions, orientation, and arrangement (single page or spread). Additional structure can be added to the page by establishing a bleed area and slug area.

The choices you make are dictated by the type of document you’re producing. If you’re creating a newsletter template, you’ll probably choose a standard page size, such as US letter or A4, and set up the pages to face each other in a spread format. When creating a brochure template, you’ll likely set up a single-page document that is horizontally oriented with a bleed area around all four sides. In more creative situations, you might even specify a custom page size.
