Understanding the Rulers

Before you can be truly efficient moving and transforming frames, it’s vital that you understand how to work with InDesign’s rulers. They allow you to make onscreen measurements and aid in the process of moving and transforming frames on the page.

InDesign provides two rulers: one is located on the top and the other is on the left side of the document window (Figure 6.1). The horizontal ruler (x-axis) governs frame width, horizontal scaling, X location, and other horizontal measurements—such as tabs and indents. The vertical ruler (y-axis) governs frame height, vertical scaling, Y location, and other vertical measurements. By default, the rulers begin measuring from the top-left corner of each spread in a document.
