What Is a Template?

A template serves as a pattern for the sequence of assembly of a publication. More specifically, it is a document that is preset with the various elements that make up a design—a model that provides a useful starting point for frequently published documents. For example, if you publish a monthly newsletter, you can create a template that contains the layout of a typical issue (Figure 1.1). Each month, you would simply start from the template and import new content into it, saving countless hours of repetitive labor.
