Design as a Business

I am often asked how to start a design business. Starting is simple; continuing takes strong commitment.

What is now Malcolm Grear Designers began in 1960 in the basement of a small apartment. I worked at a desk near the furnace. In our next apartment, I set up a shop in the attic. Soon the traffic up and down stairs (clients, typesetters, printing salesmen, paper merchants) became so heavy that my family lost all privacy. I had to find a studio away from the house.

My first design job came by way of a jazz musician who recommended me to a classical musician who owned a piano store. My task was to design a logotype and its application to stationery and a delivery truck. This brought in two more projects, which brought in ...
