Doing This Book

Ideas for this book were churning in my head for a long time before I began putting them on paper.

Once I had chosen illustrations and written a rough draft, I did sketches of a design. I built a structure based on these sketches and made pages of text and images, using photocopies of the actual materials.

After I had done all of this, the design seemed too loose and unstructured.

I prepared a second design, but this one did not accommodate the words and images in a natural manner; it was strained and stiff. I prepared several other designs before I settled on the one you now see. The trim size of the book and its general format grew out of the content, from inside to outside.
