9.6. Summary

Several RAID schemes have been defined that differ in cost, performance, and availability. Windows NT 4.0 implemented software RAID in the FtDisk driver. Windows 2000 implements software RAID via the Logical Disk Manager driver that ships with the operating system.

The Microsoft multipath architecture offers a standardized architecture for the Windows 2000 and Windows Server 2003 platforms to implement a storage solution with high availability and high performance. The architecture allows for load balancing as well as I/O path failover. This solution is available from Microsoft in the form of a development kit that vendors can license and add value to. End users can obtain the solution only from vendors.
