Windows NT releases have shown a steady progression of new storage-related features. Windows 2000 introduced dynamic disks that allow file system volumes to be managed online without application access to the volume being interrupted.

NTFS is a rich file system that added more features with Windows 2000. NTFS volumes can now be encrypted, thus preventing unauthorized access even when the disk volume is accessed via a different file system. Another notable feature is the change log journal that allows storage applications such as a replication agent or a Hierarchical Storage Management application to quickly and efficiently identify all files and directories that have been changed.
