Functional Description of Windows Server 2003 Data Storage
The Windows Server 2003 storage system supports three different disk partitioning schemes, which Microsoft associates with three different disk types as follows:
Basic MBR disks. This partitioning scheme uses the classic Intel Master Boot Record (MBR). The MBR contains a data structure called a partition table that defines up to four partitions that can be used to store data.
Basic GPT disks. This partitioning scheme is available only on IA64 systems. It uses a new form of partition table that can define up to 128 partitions, each identified by a Globally Unique Identifier (GUID).
