Authentication
So far, we've met the supporting players in the pageant of network access security and we've seen how one part of the security triumvirate, authorization, functions to control access to resources. Now it's time to meet the star of the show, the process that controls authentication. Ladies and gentlemen, give it up for Kerberos.
Kerberos was developed at MIT as part of Project Athena. Windows Server 2003 implements Kerberos version 5, update 6, as defined by RFC 1510, “The Kerberos Network Authentication Service V5.” All modern Windows platforms (Windows Server 2003, XP, and Windows 2000) use this version of Kerberos, making them fully interoperable.
