This question always arises: Should users be allowed to customize the CDE environment themselves? Most large institutions frown on letting users customize their own environments. The system administrator usually provides a default setup that is applied to all users. This default setup promotes consistency and prevents the “self-inflicted” problems that can occur when users incorrectly modify system files. The answer also depends on how much pain you’re willing to endure for the good of your user community. Users love an administrator who gives them the flexibility to arrange their own desktops. However, you can quickly have plenty of problems if users are not properly trained in the use of customization utilities.
