Toning Down Distracting Colors

Remember that our goal is to highlight the girl's face, to make it the point of attraction in the image. However, we are still distracted by the (too) red sweater, which is visually springing into the foreground. Let's find a more neutral and harmonious color:

Toning Down the Sweater

1.
Select the sweater with the Lasso tool. Be sure to select all the parts of the sweater (hold down the Shift key or use the Add to selection icon on the Options bar). Don't worry about the sweater appearing “under” the hair; you'll correct this problem using a unique method later.
2.
Click on the Background layer to make it the active layer, and press Ctrl()+J to copy the selection to a new layer. Name the new layer New Sweater. Ctrl( ...
