How Do Sync and Notification Differ?

In Chapter 16, we discussed the SyncFolderHierarchy and SyncFolderItems Web methods. Though Sync and Notification share a common goal of providing you with a way to keep an up-to-date copy of Mailbox data, there are some differences between the two.

Weight

The first difference between Sync and Notification is the amount of information each returns. Notification is lightweight and returns just the id of the affected item or folder along with the type of event that has occurred. You use a subsequent GetItem or GetFolder call with the id returned by the notification to retrieve the item or folder properties.
