Benefits of Server-Based Technology

A server-based software solution is a solution in which lightweight pieces of software, referred to as thin clients, are used to control heavier and more processor-intensive applications. These heavier applications are most often run at a central data-processing location. Much like using leverage to move a large weight, a small but powerful thin client can remotely run much larger and more robust applications. As you will see in Chapter 2, “Introduction to Windows Terminal Server,” this broad definition of server-based software technology includes not just Terminal Server and Citrix MetaFrame, but also Java, ActiveX, DHTML, and other software solutions capable of this behavior.
