You probably don’t drive the same car you did 25 years ago but your slides may look much the same as they did when PowerPoint was introduced in 1990. Much as you (and the auto industry) have learned about cleaner emissions, better fuel efficiency, and safety features such as airbags and hands-free radio, the presentation industry has studied how people learn in multimedia settings — and it’s not from bulleted lists!

In this chapter, we re-educate you about making electronic visuals. The term visuals focuses on photos, video, animations, diagrams, illustrations, charts, and graphics much more than it does on ineffective text slides, although we use slides as well. For simplicity’s sake, we use both PowerPoint and Keynote in our examples to show you that you can use apps you probably have.
