4. Business Life Cycles

To have a complete and nuanced view of innovation, it is necessary to understand and be able to use a variety of business life cycles. The product life cycle represents the consumer’s view of the product. The market life cycle represents the view from the perspective of the various competitors within a market for a specific product. The company life cycle represents the view from the perspective of the corporate executives within a company delivering a product. How these life cycles work, and their relationship to each other as well as the innovation life cycle discussed in previous chapters, is the focus of this chapter.
