OLTP versus DSS Systems

On-line transaction processing systems and decision support systems have radically different tuning needs. A typical OLTP system depends heavily upon indexes to achieve fast response from the database. In these systems the goal is to cache as much data in the buffers as possible, to reduce the number and frequency of disk accesses, and to do most or all of the data accesses through the use of indexes. There will often be multiple indexes on tables to support the major queries against them. The general approach in OLTP systems is one of finesse, in which the architect attempts to understand and prepare the system in advance for specific queries that will be run against the system.

Decision support systems usually handle ...
