Computer literacy: computer hardware and software

What is a computer?

The purpose of a computer is to process data into information (data → information). A computer may be defined literally as a ‘machine that computes’ or as ‘a machine that can be programmed to manipulate symbols. Computers can perform complex and repetitive procedures quickly, precisely and reliably and can quickly store and retrieve large amounts of data.’1
