5.4. Decentralized Storage

Decentralization as a means to improve survivability of data storage systems has been described in the context of the PASIS project at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). Essentially, the trade-off space of security, availability, and performance was investigated with respect to data storage across distributed storage units. Survivability is addressed by decentralizing storage, in other words, spreading information among independent storage nodes.
