CHAPTER 9

INFORMATION DESIGN BEST PRACTICES

In the previous chapter, we discussed what makes a good infographic. Now we will discuss the best ways to design your information. Illustration and data visualization are the two major components of infographic design. Based on your objectives, you will use one or both to varying degrees.

Broadly speaking, narrative infographics tend to use more illustrative design, while explorative infographics need to represent an unbiased view of the data, and thus have little use for illustration. We’ve found that most people want to create infographics with an approach that takes a nod from both types. As with anything design related, it’s all about finding a balance.
