Assigning Port's Base LID Address

As mentioned earlier in the book (see “Definition of a Subnet” on page 12), the SM is responsible for discovering devices within the subnet it manages. Upon discovering a device, it assigns at least one subnet-unique LID (or a range of LID addresses) to each port on a CA or router, or, if the device is a switch, a single LID address to port 0 (its management port).

The SM assigns the base LID address to a port by performing a Set operation on the port's PortInfo.LID attribute element.
