Verbs Overview

The specification defines the function calls (referred to as verbs) that the OS, application, or driver uses to communicate with a HCA's Transport Layer (i.e., the QPs). However, rather than explicitly define the function calls for any specific OS, the specification simply defines the functionality of each verb:

  • Its Input parameters.

  • Its Output parameters.

  • The effects of its execution.

The exact OS-specific implementation is outside the scope of the specification and is defined by the OS vendor.

Table 6-1 on this page lists each of the verbs defined by the specification, whether or not its implementation is mandatory, and how much privilege a software module must have in order to successfully make that verb call.
