In the nonparametric analysis, the reliability and risk functions are empirical, calculated from the data, without any assumption about the probability distribution of the data.

Without specifying any model, that is, using a nonparametric analysis, what is the reliability after 40 000 functioning hours? In the previous table, take a look at the row corresponding to 36 863 hours (displayed in bold). The next failure was produced at 43 403 hours; thus, the units still in function after 40 000 hours are the same that were working after 36 863 hours. Therefore, the reliability value at 40 000 hours is equal to 0.575.
