25.4 TV Failure
A certain component used in consumer electronic devices loosens and deteriorates over time for unknown reasons. The data of 113 components installed three years before are available and for each of these, several electronic and mechanical characteristics that were thought to be related with premature failure were recorded.
The data are stored in file TVFAILURE.MTV. Columns C1 to C5 contain the values of these characteristics and C6 indicates deterioration (1) or not (0) after three years of operation.
We would like to find a criterion to predict a possible failure within the first three years of operation.
Here, we are dealing with a typical case for which discriminant analysis can be useful.
Stat > Multivariate > Discriminant Analysis
As an example of application of the discrimination functions, suppose we have 14 components on which characteristics X1–X5 were measured and we wish to predict whether they will suffer a failure or not in the following 3 years (data of file TVFAILURE example.MTW).
