IoT industry standards and their evolution

In order for the IoT to succeed, the basic requirement is that devices are able to communicate with each other seamlessly. This is a challenge, given the different types of devices and the number of industries in which the IoT will be leveraged. Given a highly distributed value chain and a number of proprietary device implementations makes it hard to interconnect them. One single standard that covers every device and industry would be an ideal state, however, it's evident that is not practical.
