As you recall, in our IoT architecture we have sensors in Tier 1, a gateway in Tier 2, and the cloud in Tier 3. Essentially, sensors at the edge gather the equipment parameters and stream the data through the edge gateway to the cloud system that stores data and analyzes the data, and eventually presents the data back to humans for taking actions, as shown in the following diagram. This architecture is very robust and scaleless but not reliable due to network latency and bandwidth constraints.
