How do all these parts of an ICS communicate? Traditionally, ICS systems used several distinct and proprietary communication media and protocols. The recent trend has been to adopt many of these proprietary protocols to work on a common medium, Ethernet, and a common communications protocol suite, Internet Protocol (IP).
