Chapter 6

Traffic Dimensioning

One of the most important design parameters for indoor DAS solutions is to define how many speech channels you must provide for the users of the building in order to cater for their need for voice traffic channels. Voice traffic is time-critical. Many data services can be degraded in speed, offset slightly or delayed in time without any degradation of the user experience. It does not matter if your mail or SMS is delayed by 30 s, but the voice connection must be maintained 1:1 in time; one voice call needs one permanent traffic channel.

How do you calculate the number of channels needed to cater for the capacity requirements of the users in a specific building? And when you know the number of users and the type of users, how do you then use this information to calculate the number of channels? In the early days of telephony over fixed lines, a Danish mathematician faced similar challenges when dimensioning how many telephone lines were needed to interconnect fixed telephone switches.
