The Supreme Court of India

The Constitution of India provides for the establishment of a Supreme Court for the whole country in Part V, Chapter IV, under Articles 124 to 147 of the Constitution. The court came into being on 26 January 1950, the day on which the Constitution of free and independent India was promulgated. Till 10 October 1949, the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in England was the highest court for the country. Later, the Federal Court set up under the Government of India Act, 1935, was the final court of appeal until the Supreme Court was constituted.
