An introduction to the world of indexing

This book is the result of a course I have been teaching for a few years now in a library school. The rather vague curriculum plan says that it should deal with ‘indexing systems’, which should mean something like ‘things other than subject headings and thesauri’. This allowed me to explore with an open mind what is happing in the world of indexing.

Gradually I discovered some fascinating new trends in indexing, especially in the domain of automatic indexing. I also learned that some of the newer phenomena on the Web, e.g. tagging, had everything to do with indexing and that a lot of interesting research is being done in this field.
