Anti-globalization headlines in the economic news reached a peak at the beginning of the millennium. But after 9/11, economic anti-globalization demonstrations were overshadowed by more sinister developments. As the headline news after September 11 shifted to a focus on terrorism and the Iraq war, economic globalization movement was more or less transformed into an anti-war force. Demonstrations that once would have attacked the power of the WTO and the spread of American brands instead featured slogans such as “No war for oil” and “No right to kill.” Life and death issues trumped economics and marketing.
