This chapter introduces the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP). SIP is the control-plane protocol used in the IMS network for registration, session establishment, message routing, terminal capability exchange, presence services, etc. Although SIP is not the only protocol used in IMS, it does constitute one of the cornerstones of IMS.
