8.4. Summary

Beware of programs. By definition, programs end. Performance improvement, by contrast, should never end. Successful performance improvement efforts tend to meet four criteria:

  • They establish an infrastructure, which enables them to be sustained without "special program" mechanisms.

  • They are goal driven. They begin with a set of goals and include a mechanism for reestablishing goals over time.

  • They involve substantive actions at the Organization, Process, and Job/Performer Levels.

  • They are driven by the active involvement of the top management in the organization.
