14.1. Designing an Organization Structure

We believe that an effective organization structure results from the following activities and decisions. Starting with Phase φ (see Chapter Ten) accomplishes, provides input to, or helps set priorities for Steps 1 to 3 below. Process redesign efforts (Phases 1, 2, and 3) fuel Steps 3 and 4. Installing an integrated measurement system and taking other continuous improvement actions provides a substantial input to Step 5. So, the amount of work that has to be done before Step 5 depends on what has already been done. In the next section, we provide a comprehensive example that illustrates these steps.
