Assessing Data Definition and Information Architecture Quality

Business information is the language of the enterprise. Failure to robustly define the business language can cripple the enterprise's ability to communicate. Poorly defined data can lead to misunderstanding, making information quality uncertain, thereby creating a dysfunctional learning organization. Dysfunctional learning organizations cannot perform efficiently, let alone effectively.
In this chapter we define what data definition is and why it is essential to information quality of internal data marts and databases or application software package databases. We identify the components of data definition and describe the data definition components whose quality is essential for business performance.
We also define a process for measuring data definition and information architecture quality of data models and databases or application software package databases. The process includes how to define measures for data definition quality, how to identify information for quality assessment, and how to identify the information stakeholders who are the information customers. Then we describe how to conduct the two kinds of data definition quality assessments: a technical assessment of information architecture and database design quality, and a customer satisfaction assessment with data definition quality.
