This book is nearly sixteen years in the making, as the methodology described herein was born in the summer of 1998 during the course of a collaboration I undertook with United Airlines CIO Bruce Parker. Bruce was gracious enough to take the ideas of a twenty-four-year-old consultant seriously, and worked with me and my team to help shape some of the key early aspects of the strategic planning methodology. Three of his direct reports at the time, Bob Bongiorno, Nirup Krishnamurthy, and Bonnie Henn-Pritchard, went on to become CIOs and IT executives at major corporations in a variety of industries.
